A very very long time ago....................... There lived an enchanted and mysterious animal that was able to survive in the coldest and most harsh climate just below the Arctic Circle. This wild looking animal survived predators through it's speed, intelligence and cunning. It's hunting skills were superior and enabled it to survive this unforgiving harsh climate. It's double coat of guard hairs and woolly undercoat was critical in keeping it warm and dry from the wind and snow that was so typical of this climate. Cats who suvived through their first winter were long legged, springy, intelligent and brave. This very special natural breed evolved without any human interference. These were truly amazing animals and were written about long ago in Norse Mythology. They spoke of a cat so huge that even the God Thor could not lift it from the ground. It was said that the Goddess of Love and Fertility, Freya, had a carriage pulled by two large cats who were huge and furry, later to be known in Scandinavian Fairy Tales as "Troll Cats" and later to be known as Norwegian Forest Cats or the Norsk "Skaukatt", as it is known in its native land. How long the Forest Cat existed in Norway is not clear, only that it is a very old breed. Some believe that it's ancestry might include shorthairs brought from Great Britain by the Vikings and longhaired cats brought by the Crusaders. It was believed that these cats mated with farm and feral stock. It didn't take long for farmers in Norway who prized this strong hearty cats superior hunting abilities to pay attention to the Forest Cat. They soon began caring for these wonderful creatures and welcoming them as permanent visitors to the domestic hearth. These cats responded with love and fidelity to their owners. The breed was recognized in Norway in 1930 and first shown in 1938.
